From
his schooldays Bob Parkinson, director of Shenpar Competitions,
has been an avid motorsport fan. If a car had wheels and an
engine, Bob was keen to drive or navigate. Hoving had a taste
of Karting, Bob took the plunge into circuit racing with his
strong allegiance to Minis and Mini variants. The 1960s saw
Bob gain two lap records and many victories at most of the
major circuits. In the 1970s, Bob retired from racing, apart
from a short spell of Superkarting and competing in the "Avon
Tour of Britain" in 1975. When Shenpar was created in 1978
Bob was in an ideal situation of having had first hand experience
in racing and rallying.

 |
1989
Saw the debut into racing for Bob's eldest son, Simon,
who entered the Cellnet Formula First single seater championship.
His first race in the Shenpar prepared car was at his
home circuit, Mallory Park, but his most successful was
at Oulton Park in Cheshire when he was lying 10th overall
until the gear linkage cracked, but still finished 15th
using only fourth gear. Unfortunately the season ended
abruptly at Brands Hatch when an horrific accident caused
a broken ankle. |
|
| A
return to racing in 1990, undeterred by the previous seasons'
accident, saw Simon behind the wheel of a Mondiale Formula
Ford 1600 competing in the "Star of Mallory" championship.
Best results included a Pole Position, fastest lap of
the race, and a second place overall. The Shenpar backed
machine also did two National FF1600 Junior Series races
where Simon finished a creditable 7th overall at both
races. A Semi final place at the Brands Hatch Formula
Ford festival finished off a superb season for the team.
|
|
|
| 1991
saw selected rounds of the National 'Motorcraft' Open Formula
Ford championship with the best result being a 7th overall at
Silverstone. A victory in the "Champion of Cadwell" FF1600 race
sealed Shenpar's return to racing. |
|
The
Purchase of a Formula Renault 1700 in 1992 moved the Shenpar
teams' goal up another level into the "Wings and Slicks"
category. Once again with Simon behind the wheel, a selection
of Touring car support races were entered with a 3rd in
class / 10th overall being the best result at Pembrey
in South Wales. |
|
| In
1993, Bob's youngest son, Nick, began to take an interest
in the Shenpar racing scene and so entered several Formula
First meetings to gain valuable race car experience which
he could put to good use in the customer race car preparation
department, which was now going from strength to strength.
|
 |
|
 |
A
Newer Formula Renault 1700 was bought and maintained by
Shenpar the following year, and with Simon in that, brother
Nick was in the Formula First and several customer supported
race cars, Shenpar felt that they were really making their
mark on the racing scene. |
|
| During
the season, Simon competed in several races, taking in
such circuits as Donington Park, Knockhill in Scotland
and the new Grand Prix Circuit at Silverstone. |
|
|
|
After
a couple of years lay off from racing, whilst Simon and
Nick concentrated on their business commitments, Shenpar
decided to return to racing, but in a saloon car category
to once again reaffirm their bond with Peugeot. The 750
M.C. Hot Hatch championship was selected, and a 205 was
bought and prepared for the 1997 season. Out of a full
grid at nearly all the races, Simon was consistently in
the top 6, and on many occasions the highest placed Peugeot.
The final championship positions were just deserts for
the Shenpar teams' dedication to the project as Simon
was 5th overall and the highest placed Peugeot. |
|
 |
| The
1998 season was used as an engine development year for
the Hot Hatch, with the Shenpar team looking for podium
positions as well as consistent top 6 results. This was
shown in qualifying as Simon was never out of the top
six and had his first pole position at Mallory Park mid
way through the year. These qualifying positions turned
into results with a 2nd place at Pembrey and a 3rd at
Castle Combe being the highlights of the Shenpar year.
|
|
|
During
1999 Simon and Nick shared the 205 Hot Hatch, doing selected
rounds of the championship because of Simon's work and
Rally navigating commitments. The best result was Simon's
4th place at Donington Park, whilst being filmed by a
Newcastle Television Crew for a fly-on-the-wall TV documentary.
|
|
| As
well as circuit racing, Shenpar has had an 11 year alliance
with sprint and hillclimb racer Jeremy Edwards from Birmingham,
preparing and maintaining his 205 engine through a variety
of different engine specifications. Past successes include
finishing in the top 20 in the Nottingham Sports Car club
Speed championship, and 2nd in class in the A.M.M.C speed
championship in 1990 and 1991. In 1999 he contested rounds
of the Wadham Kenning Sprint Championship. |

Having completed several years of 'Hot
Hatch'racing, the team decided to investigate the potential
of a Pug powered kit car - a new millennium,a new challenge.
A Locost, previously raced in 750 Motor
Club Kit Car Championship, with a CVH engine, was purchased
and an engine out of the Hot Hatch modified to fit.
Painstakingly the car was assembled, and a track day
at Donington used to make its debut. Three to four laps
in,and the car was flying, but suddenly it coasted to
a standstill; the engine had succumbed. Potentially
the car was a race winner, but oil surge and engine
breathing problems forced the project to be abandoned.
Many of our customers have enjoyed
great success with more conventional set ups, including
Kenny Murray,205 Mi 16 who had a championship win, Lee
Griffiths' 205 which also won his championship, Pete
Felix with his 106 Stockhatch, and many more on the
circuits and sprinting scenes.
Looking to the future, the clock is
being turned back by the discovery of a Buckler/Villiers
racing kart, circa 1960, which in fact was raced by
Bob Parkinson in the early 60's! It is complete and
is being restored at the moment,so that it can join
the Historic Karting events.
Although he is too young to race, Nick's
son Zac is about to try out a Cadet Kart - the next
generation are already on the move!
Back on the Peugeot front, Shenpar
is developing two trackday cars - a 106 & a 205, utilising
a lot of the specialised parts they have been developing,
to try and help customers to enjoy track time for an
affordable outlay.
